Decades, centuries and even millennia of sunlight, temperature fluctuations, rain, snow and even earthquakes have taken their toll. The destructive impact of floodwaters on the ancient Thai city of Sukhothai is but one example. The effects are widespread and in some cases have accelerated exponentially.
Deep in the mountains of North Carolina, at the end of a beautiful valley near Western Carolina University sits an ancient wonder of Native American culture. Called Judaculla Rock, the soapstone boulder maintains a silent and lonely vigil in a quiet field, the handiwork of a long-forgotten people. But not completely forgotten, for the rock is covered with their mysterious glyphs. The meaning behind them or even who carved them is a mystery. There aren’t many science articles to be found about Judaculla Rock, especially on the environment’s impact on the glyphs. But what is lacking in the literature can be seen by comparing earlier images of the carvings with modern observation. The mysterious glyphs are fading away. Even worse, they seem to be fading at an ever-increasing rate.
For centuries the Cherokee Indians dominated the region, but the rock was considered ancient even by them. They believed the rock bears the seven-fingered handprint of Judaculla, or “great lord of the hunt,” a mountain-top leaping giant who controlled the weather. Other attempts at explaining the rock carving’s origins range from it being a map to the depiction of a great ancient battle to something as mundane as pointless graffiti. Whatever their purpose, the rock itself has been used by humans for perhaps 3,000 years or more. Originally it was a source for soapstone bowls, represented by a multitude of indentations predating the carvings.
It’s a bit ironic that a relic of the weather god is being partially destroyed by the weather. Through the centuries the rock has sat through howling snowstorms, sheets of pounding rain, baking sunshine in the summer and rock-splitting cold in the winter. That it has survived so well is a wonder, but what is even more wondrous yet tragic is the improper care and lack of consideration from visitors, especially in more recent years. Children have been allowed to climb all over it; people have whittled their own graffiti on it and carved pieces from it. It has even been used as a mountain-bike ramp! Most destructive have been site modifications that have increased sedimentation and encouraged erosion. Efforts to protect it by covering it with a gazebo structure did more harm than good when moisture accumulated and froze on it in the winter. The moisture also encouraged the growth of destructive fungi and the structure had to be taken down.
Fortunately, environmental news doesn’t have to be all bad. Jackson County, N.C. officials and the Cherokee Nation have been working the past two years to protect it. A railing is being built around it and excavation work has begun to restore the natural contours and drainage around the rock. These efforts won’t be able to restore damage that has already been done, but it’s hoped that future degradation can be thwarted.
